Poopy Mood

Wind: from S 3.5 m/sec (8 mph); Air Temperature: 24.2 °C (76 °F); Water Temperature: 22.11 °C (72 °F) Today at the lake, it was cooling down from a 90-degree day. There were still a lot of people at the lake when I arrived after 7pm. Everyone is squeezing out every last drop of summer. Why not?  I felt like crap, but made myself go to the lake anyway, figuring that even if all I did was float, it would be better than staying in the hot house. When I started to enter the lake, a guy on a jetski

Just Do It

Sunday August 25 830PM Today at the lake it was sunny and not so hot. Sort of a perfect day. I checked the water temp before I left – 69 F – so I wore a wetsuit. New rule: wettest if it’s under 70. The lifeguards were winding down their shift as I arrived, and the swim area was empty. I saw a few paddle boarders here and there in the deep water, but it looked like I wouldn’t have any trouble with traffic today. There were big waves and wakes from the motor boats, but I didn’t mind that.

Pacing Myself

21 July 2024 Wind: from S 6.1 m/sec (14 mph) Air Temperature: 22.1 °C (72 °F) Water Temperature: 24.33 °C (76 °F) Today at the lake it was cooler than it’s been in weeks, and the energy at the park was low-key in spite of the packed lot.  I was super tired from working on my house yesterday, so my goal was to let the water cool my body. I swam out toward the boat launch, and quickly found myself in deeper water.  As I glided over a clump of milfoil, the Sounds of Silence came into my head, but

Milfoil Primavera

July 16 Wind: from S 1.2 m/sec (3 mph) Air Temperature: 25.7 °C (78 °F) Water Temperature:25.97 °C (79 °F) Today at the lake, there were not so many people there, which as a big relief. The parking lot was still mostly full, but there were not cars parked illegally along the entrance road.  The energy was much more laidback, the Tuesday night crowd.  I ran into one of the regulars, who I now know as Stu, and it was nice to say hi. He pointed out a man sitting on the steps near the beach who had fallen. He

Move It

July 5, 2024 Wind: from S 3.0 m/sec (7 mph) Air Temperature: 25.4 °C (78 °F) Water Temperature: 22.19 °C (72 °F) Hot Day, Cool Water Today at the lake it was hot, sunny, and crowded. By the time we arrived at the park the crowds had thinned enough that we found a parking spot, but there were still lots of people enjoying the holiday weekend.  I sat down on the beach to put on my water shoes just around the time a mother duck and her babies waddled up on the grass. The ducklings have grown so much. They

Get Free

June 29 2024, Saturday Wind: from S 3.2 m/sec (7 mph); Air Temperature: 19.6 °C (67 °F); Water Temperature: 19.01 °C (66 °F) Today at the lake it was overcast and trying to drizzle. The water was fairly flat thanks to the lake of boaters. There were two little kids playing in the shallow water at the north end of the beach.  There was a mother duck and her little babies curled up on the beach, taking a late nap. I didn’t get a phot because I’d already stashed my phone in my bag.  My friend C came with me

A Kingdom of Green

June 25th, 2024 Wind: from S 1.8 m/sec (4 mph); Air Temperature: 23.5 °C (74 °F): Water Temperature: 20.77 °C (69 °F) Today at the lake it was sunny, warm, and feeling very summery for 6pm on a Tuesday night.  I think it was almost 80 F, but there was a breeze coming off the water so I didn’t get that suffocating heat wrap feeling. There was still space in the air, and walking didn’t feel like a major effort.  The beach was pretty busy for a weeknight. I saw a unicorn floaty or two, as well as some generic

Beach Freak

June 9, 2024 Wind: from S 4.2 m/sec (9 mph);Air Temperature: 18.6 °C (65 °F); Water Temperature: 17.48 °C (63 °F) Today at the lake it was overcast, warm but not hot, breezy.  As I walked to the beach I noticed a few people with a table and huge jars of some colored drinks. They were selling tamales and drinks. Brilliant idea. And I’m sure the park will shut them down asap.  The beach wasn’t too crowded due to the later hour, but there were still a few kids in the water and several families spread out across the grass,

“Después de la Playa”

Sunday May 12, 2024 Wind: from S 5.3 m/sec (12 mph). Air Temperature: 19.9 °C (68 °F). Water Temperature: 5.22 °C (59 °F) Today at the lake, it was sunny and warm, and the water was choppy. There were kids and adults playing, laughing, and speaking Spanish in the shallow area. There were families everywhere, clustered around tables full of food. The activity in the water had loosened the icky brown furry stuff that grows on the lake floor rocks all winter, turning the normally clear water into a soupy mess. There were clumps of the furry stuff in the

Just Keep Trying

March 29 Friday Wind:from NW 6.6 m/sec (15 mph); Air Temperature:1.3 °C (52 °F); Water Temperature:10.42 °C (51 °F) Today at the lake it was sunny, and I felt hopeful as I approached the beach because it seemed almost like a Spring day. I started off swimming south toward the boat launch. I tried swimming crawl, but I had to switch to breast stroke. I’m so out of swimming shape after taking off a few weeks. I’m also so exhausted from all the stress with my family and my financial & housing situation now that I just don’t have anything

Night Moves

February 27, 2024 Wind: from S 4.0 m/sec (9 mph) Air Temperature: 6.8 °C (44 °F) Water Temperature: 7.45 °C (45 °F) Today at the lake it was dark, windy, and cold.  I met my new swim buddy, S, at the other beach for a night swim. I usually find parking right near the beach, but tonight I had to park a block away. No biggie.  S hadn’t been in the water in a long time, so she wasn’t sure how long she’d last. I couldn’t get my second headlamp to work, so I couldn’t put it into her tow

Stayin’ Alive

2/25/2024 Wind: from S 11.1 m/sec (25 mph). Air Temperature: 9.3 °C (49 °F). Water Temperature: 7.73 °C (46 °F). Today at the lake, it was clearly not a good day for swimming. The wind was fierce, and there were huge waves – whitecaps, even – crashing against and dispersing the pebbles on the beach. Naturally, I couldn’t wait to get in. The wind was blowing so hard that my cap starting rolling across the beach. I saw a kite surfer in the distance, way down by the boat launch.  I knew it wasn’t smart to swim in that sort

Get In No Matter What

Feb 16, 2024 Wind: from SE 6.1 m/sec (14 mph). Air Temperature: 9.1 °C (48 °F) Water Temperature: 7.55 °C (46 °F) Today at the lake it was sunny and blustery. The water was really choppy, but I was desperate to get in the lake after not exercising for five days.  I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or if my gear is wearing down, but I was leaking everywhere today. The water was crazy cold, and it was flooding in through the neck and seeping in through the back zipper. I had to start and stop about seven

Following the Sand Ridges

Jan 25, 2024 Wind: from S 2.5 m/sec (6 mph). Air Temperature:10.4 °C (51 °F). Water Temperature:7.67 °C (46 °F) Today at the lake it was much warmer outside, but the water was still cold. It’d been nine days since my last swim, and I was desperate to get in the water.  I went to the night beach with J, who planned to do a land workout while I swam.  There are cement steps that lead from the main walkway to the beach, so they are great for a leg workout. There are also two benches, so J was able

When Motivation Gets Me To the Lake

Wind: from N 4.4 m/sec (10 mph) | Air Temperature: -4.1 °C (25 °F) | Water Temperature: 8.03 °C (46 °) Today at the lake it was cold and clear, with snow-covered mountains in the distance. I met R, a young man I met a couple weeks ago on the beach. I would never have made it outside if not for meeting someone. In fact, I’d already decided not to go. But I got the message from R that he was up for swimming. Grateful for that. I arrived before he did, so I got in the water and started swimming.

When You NEED a Swim

Does anyone else get ansty and start feeling like you’re in a funk if too many days go by between swims…..cause I really get desperate for the lake after a few days. This photo is in Solna, Stockholm. One of my favorite swim spots during my three months there. The water was clean and cool. I could pull up and see beautiful parks on the shore. I had a fun swim buddy I got to swim with several times. It was just a 15-20 min bike ride away from where I was staying. I’m seriously thinking of starting a swimming

Colder

Jan 7, 2024. Temp 40 F. Water temp 47 F. Today at the lake it was cold. Colder than usual. Still 40 F, but everything felt colder.  I went with my neighbor, S, and we were both feeling cold as we assembled our gear on the beach. The hardest part of winter swims is getting out of bed. The next hardest is getting to the car. Once I’m in the car, on my way, I’m good. Then there is another big pause on the beach. Am I really going to willingly walk into that cold water? I got ready quicker

The Guardian: Free Diving

January 7, 2024 Interesting article from The Guardian about an Australian woman who has an incredible capacity for free diving. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/feb/06/i-didnt-even-know-this-was-humanly-possible-the-woman-who-can-descend-into-the-sea-on-one-breath?CMP=share_btn_link

Better With a Buddy

Weather Data 12/17/2023 07:02 PM PST | Wind: from NW 2.8 m/sec (6 mph) | Air Temperature: 7.8 °C (46 °F) | Water Temperature: 9.25 °C (49 °F) (Lake Washington Buoy Data) Today at the lake it was sunny, and I felt hopeful. I was late meeting my swim buddy, K5, because I thought I forgot my gloves and had to go back home when I was halfway there. I hate being late for swims. I haven’t been swimming with K5 since April. Injuries and other things have kept her out of the water. She is a complete trooper, in

Friendly Peeps at the Park

Wind: from NW 3.8 m/sec (9 mph) | Air Temperature: 8.2 °C (47 °F) | Water Temperature: 9.39 °C (49 °F) (Lake Washington Buoy Weather Data 12/14/2023 ) Today at the lake it was chilly but not cold, and the water was nice and flat. There weren’t many people in the park. I saw two or three people walking on the trail I the distance. A lady and her grandson pulled into the parking spot next to mine, and she said, “there’s that crazy lady who swims in the cold water.” It was a pleasant opening. We chatted as we

The Escape I Needed

December 11, 2023 Today at the lake, the water was cool and cold and perfect. All my stress dissolved. In the water I can other have superficial thoughts because my brain empties. Or, more like my thoughts are surface, observational, fleeting. There’s some sand on the bottom. There’s some seaweedy thingies. There’s some wilting milfoil. There’s that rock that marks the edge of the swim area. I can’t worry about anything in my life because in the water my brain doesn’t work like that. I didn’t even hate on the birds today even thought there were globs of white poop

Malmö Rocks

16 October 2023 Monday. Cold, windy, sunny. Today in Malmo, I rode my bike to the skateboard park, then I headed towards the beach.  The first swimming place had a lovely wooden deck and little jetty/dock thingies you could walk out on, with ladders into the water. People were taking photos because nobody in their right mind would swim there now. It was quite windy today, so the waves were too strong for swimming. It was cold, too, but I have a wetsuit.  I pedaled all over this fancy, new part of town, wondering how much $ I would need

Big Wind, Big Waves

7 Oct 2023 Today at the lake it was crazy cold and windy. Like wind-chill cold. The temperature was 47 F, but it felt like 20 F. F!!!  I arrived early so I could get my wetsuit on properly and be ready when my swim buddy arrived so she didn’t have to wait for me to get into the water.  I arrived too early, so killed time taking photos of the waves. I’m bummed that they don’t look as big as they were. I didn’t notice, but H commented that the city had taken down the rope and bobber thingies

No Pain in the Rain

Tues, Oct 3, 2023. Stockholm. Today at the lake, it was pouring rain.  I made plans to meet my new swim buddy, H, at her beach, but I was late getting up, so we pushed the time out a bit. Even with that, I was late because Google Maps said it would take me 13 minutes. It took longer.  By the time I arrived I was all the way soaked and a wee bit cold, but I didn’t care. H was there in her giant swim parka, and we were just as happy to swim in the rain. I struggled

Return to Odensvi

Today ate the lake, the water was chilly and flat. My host took me to the same lake that her friend took me to last week.  It’s a lovely setup, with a large playground for kids, lots of picnic tables and places to cook food, changing rooms, and a nice beach. The U-shaped dock is ideal because it creates a safe, enclosed place for the kiddie and a place for swimmers to enter the water. I love that they have a ramp for helping people in wheelchairs get into the water. The water felt soft and silky on my skin. I

Cows, Sheep, Violets

Sat sep 9 6:27pm Skaftekulla badplats Today at the lake I didn’t want to get out of the water.  My host drove me to a remote lake next to a cow and sheep pasture. It was perfect. The water was cool and flat, and I could see little skirmishes on top of the water here and there where water bugs where doing their thing. There were lots of huge rock formations – one, really, that we had to walk over and around to reach the dock. There was a little forest area surrounding the lake, and there were a few

Storsjön

Weds Sept 6, 7pm Today at the lake I took a bus 30 minutes away to try a new swimming spot in the tiny village of Edsbruk.  I got off at the wrong stop, so I had to walk almost a mile, but I didn’t mind. Maybe it was only 1/2 a mile.  There were huge rock formations surrounded the swim beach, and then a little back beach on the other side where I saw lots of little motorboats. There was also a diving board. And, if you’ve got time to kill, a tiny bookcase library. Naturally. I got changed

Swimming Wimmin in Sweden

Friday Sept 1 grey and cold and rainy. Today at the lake, we cancelled because of rain. But by the end of the day I was having a fit over my lack of wifi options, and my host’s friend, Y, and I decided a swim was necessary. So glad that I was smart enough to disengage and change gears. A swim is always in order.  We drove to her lovely farm house in another village, then we drove to a huge lake. There was a large, maybe three-story building near the lake that housed a cafe, a community center, a

So Såduggen

Monday August 28, 2023 Today at the lake, I swam in a beautiful, clean lake, Såduggen, surrounded by trees and blue sky. It was glorious. My host drove me to a lake about 10 miles away. There was nobody there, which seems bizarre to me because where I live there are always people around, even if just a few people walking their dogs. But this is a rural area.  The lake looked amazing and inviting with a tidy dock system that organized several swim areas:  shallow space for tots, a protected area for others, then two parallel docks that lead

Jellyfish

Thursday, August 24, 2023 Today at the lake, I swam with the jellyfish. And I rocked. And I think they might have, too.  It’s about a mile or more to bike there, and the bike is too small for me, so it’s a bit tricky because my feet sometimes hit the front wheel. But I am getting it done. And I walk on the hills.  There was a young Italian couple at the beach today, and they weren’t swimming. I asked why, and it was because of the jellyfish. I told them that I was afraid of them too and

Seven Lake Witches and One Little Dead Fish

Temp 56 F Water Temp 64 F Today at the lake it was grey, so there were not tons of people at the park.  We had a record turnout today: seven lake witches!!!!! I have been trying to get a regular gig with other women swimmers for two years. Finally!  One woman could only stay a few minutes, one was a beginner, and another one had not done this in a long time. So once we chatted a bit we all got in together before heading in our own directions. The water was still kinda of hazy, but I could

Water Warming Up

Temp 78.  Water temp 66 F. Today at the lake it felt blazing hot in my wetsuit. I was very eager to get in the water.  We had a new swimmer today, so I was very excited to welcome her into our little group. We chatted a bit before we got into the water, and she, too, broke her leg (and her arm) and had to get surgery. We compared scars, but most of mine were covered by my wetsuit. It’s so odd that as soon as we started talking about it I felt noticeably different. Like maybe it wasn’t

Don’t Let the Sun Fool You

Temp 51 F Water Temp 55 F. Drizzly, grey day. It’s been raining all day.  Today at the lake, it was grey and raining. I should say “still raining” because it’s been raining all day. I decided to change up my gear because I felt too warm the other day, but it ended up being a big mistake. I swapped my hood for a thermal cap, my 5mm gloves for my 1mm gloves, and my two layers of neoprene socks for my Vibram FiveFinger shoes. I also brought shorts and a t-shirt for my after-swim gear and left my warm

Sweet Spring Sunshine

Temp 70 Water Temp 55.  Today at the lake it was gloriously sunny and warm. The water was fairly glassy, except for occasional small wakes from boats. We were five today, a record! D, K4, K6, I, and me! A combo of swimmers, some in wetsuits some in just swimsuits.  The park was buzzing with people walking dogs, playing soccer on the grass, hanging around in hammocks, sunbathing on the beach. Lots of windsurfers, which kind of sucked because one of them glided right through the swim area and could have hit one of us. Dick.  Where Were All of

Thank You, Lake

Air Temp 54, Water Temp 54 Today at the lake it was drizzly and grey. The water was glassy. It hardly made a sound when it touched the beach.  There were cars in the parking lot, but I couldn’t see people. Maybe one or two walkers.  I didn’t swim yesterday, which is my usual day, but I was glad my home aide, K, likes to take me swimming. She waits until I’m done, then she jumps in just in her swimsuit. Then we shower together and marvel at the view.  I was happy to be in my transition wetsuit even

I Earned This Swim

Temp 77 Water Temp 53  Today at the lake it was hot and sunny. The parking lot at the park was packed, and as we pulled in I could see people everywhere, playing frisbee, sitting on towels, strolling on the paths. I love seeing everyone enjoying themselves, and it really struck me that I have slogged through many, many, many months of grey, rain, and cold. I earned today’s warm swim. I tried my favorite wetsuit today because the water has been too warm for my thick thermal suit lately. My Orca wetsuit is also thermal, but it’s not as

Floaty McBloaty

65 F temp. 51 F water temp. Today at the lake it was gloriously warm and sunny. I got to swim with L, who I have not seen in almost a year!  There were tons of black ducks in the swim area and a few tots on the beach with their parents. I love how they can squat down and focus on the rocks for sooo long. Plus, their little sun hats are adorbs.  The water was glassy and a bit murky. Green. Hazy green. I felt like lead again, but pushed myself to swim to and from the cement

Good Gear = Good Swim

April 5. Temp 51 F. Water temp 47 F. Today at the lake…a different beach. I was too tired to drive to my usual beach so I swam at the park near my house. It is a lovely park with lots of gigantic trees, benches, picnic tables, a basketball court, children’s playground. And a sand beach.  I don’t swim here often because the showers are not working, and the water quality is not as good as it is on my beach. It was pretty murky today. I don’t know if it is the creek runoff or the way the water

Onward!

Today at the lake it was windy and c-c-cold.  I met with K5, who I haven’t seen in two weeks. Always nice to swim with her. She just started this winter, and was smart to buy thermal gear. I’m always impressed with how she is in the water and unafraid, just figuring it out as she goes. It is no small thing to start swimming in winter. The waves turned out to be stronger than they looked, so swimming was challenging. I did lots of bobbing and running in place in the deep water. I also tried to swim a

Slipped But Didn’t Fall

March 10, 2023. Water temp 44. Today at the lake, it was dark. We got there late, but I wanted to get a quick swim in cause it’s been a hard week. On the way to the beach I slipped in the mud but remained standing. The terror that would usually have sent me into a full-blown panic attack did NOT take over. I was bugged, but also able to regroup quickly and tell myself that I didn’t fall. HUGE progress. The water was cold, and today it was trickling in around my neck and ears. And along my lower

Tot With Rocks

Jan 25, 2023 Today at the lake it was grey, and I was alone. My swim buddy wasn’t feeling well, so I decided to go by myself. I was lucky to find a man and his tiny two-year-old daughter at the water’s edge, throwing rocks into the lake. Of course, I had to say hi and comment on the darling tiny orange boots. It was a bit of a struggle getting one of my gloves on because it was still wet from the other day. I hate how my gloves don’t dry inside. The inside of my hood smelllllls bad,

End of Summer Swim

Sept 28 – Sunny sky, cold water. Today at the lake…it was COLD. I met with my swim buddy, K4 (lots of K names; I had to number them), and there was nobody in the water. Not many people at the park, either. Funny that the temperature drops a bit, and the park clears out. Fair weather people! We figured it would be cold, but neither of is wanted to bother with a wetsuit. We waded into the water up to our waists, and then did lots of yelling and complaining about how cold the water was. I couldn’t feel

The Flowers in My Hood

Sunday July 10, 2022 Today at the lake…I didn’t go to the lake. I took a walk. My first walk since surgery. I walked a block and back. Actually, it was two half blocks, but whatever. It was excruciatingly slow because I’m not putting full weight into my leg yet. I plant the walker, then step with left while I lift myself up a bit on the walker. Then right step. Repeat.  I can’t go too quickly because I actually have to concentrate. At first I was frustrated and angry, really resenting the need for patience. I have been so

Down Time is Starting to Chafe

July 9, 2022 Saturday Today at the lake…still not at the lake. It’s been one month and three days since my surgery, and I am finally out of the wheelchair (f yea!!) and walking with a walker.  Progress Saw my doc’s assistant last week, and she said I could go ahead and walk and put weight into the leg. So I am practicing, gradually putting a bit of weight into my leg. My knee is all locked up, so I’ve started to fall a few times. Still, I’m careful, and now I can move around I’m just all about walking.

Sunny, With a Light Breeze

Today at the lake……pure sunshine, flat water, and heat with a little breeze. Perfect. Except the closest I got to the lake was my landlord’s front lawn. What a view! It’s been two weeks and five days since my last swim, the night before my surgery. My leg is healing nicely, I think. The pain rapidly subsided over the first week, and now I’m waiting for all the medi-strips covering the incision to fall off.  Except last night when I couldn’t sleep at 5am I got up and peeled off several strips and trimmed others. There is a plastic thread

Not Bad for a Tuesday

May 17 6:35pm Today at the lake, the water was flat, refreshing, and full of sunbeams. There were several paddle boarders on the lake, a few motor boats, one fishing boat, a sail boat in the distance, and a floaty plane.  Cuidado! Why the F floaty planes come to my lake to practice landings and takeoffs is beyond me, but it chaps my ass. It’s hard enough to pay attention to oncoming boats when I’m swimming in the deep, but planes are worse because they move faster. I had my yellow buoy on, but do they look? Do they know

Spun Around

Today at the lake….I am on my couch. Flat out. Sweaty, dizzy, waiting to succumb to my second COVID Moderna vaccination from this afternoon.  Feeling Crappy I wanted to go back to bed when I got home because doing this daily TMS treatment is killing me. I’m not sleeping, so I’m a zombie all week. I usually sleep without an alarm on Sat and Sunday so I can sleep 14 hour days. This weekend it seemed prudent to get my vax out of the way since I’m having surgery just a few days after my final TMS treatment.  Where are

Never Mind About the Weather

Monday April 25, 2022 | water temp 46-50 F Today at the lake it was windy, wavy, and wet. When I arrived a kiteboarder was literally sailing through the air. Badass.  The waves were fairly big, and the beach was deserted. Kinda dreary and dark, but I’ve decided I don’t care and I’m not gonna get killed at the beach. I MUST swim.  It’s been a wild few days, and I don’t know how to describe it or talk about it because I’m still processing. But I will try.  Love is All Around Me The short version is: I had

One Day at a Time

19 April 2022 | Water 46-50 F Today at the lake it was sunny, the water was clear and flat, and I got to swim with one of my swim buddies for the third time in about 10 days. Bonus!  Swim Buddy Better I have gotten used to swimming alone, so having a few swim dates in a row has been feeling so good. Like I am finally finding a community of swimmers. Today the other ladies messaged me to swim, too, but I already had plans to swim a bit later with K. I love that we were in

Friday On My Mind

15 April 2022 | Sunny | Water 46 F Today at the lake, it was sunny, it was Friday, it was perfect. I met my swim buddy again, and finally remembered to bring my extra gloves so she could wear them over her 1mm gloves, which just aren’t warm enough this time of year. I had a perfect swim, one of my best ever. I was smooth and able to keep up a nice pace. I listened my breathing and swim inside a magnificent tunnel of sunbeams. Between focussing on my breathe and looking into the tunnel I was so

Two Ducks and a Swim Buddy

April 13, 2022 | Water Temp 46 F Today at the lake it was cold outside, but the lake was nice and flat. I was happy to meet up with a swim buddy. I was tired after my zapping treatment, but always happy to be at the beach, chatting with my swim buddy, getting ready to enter the water. The duck couple that is always there was paddling around in the shallow water. I felt welcomed by them because they didn’t swim or fly away. They’re so used to people. Plus, it’s their lake. I noticed my swim buddy had

Just Get in the Water

April 11, 2022 | Cold but sunny Today at the lake it was cold. My buoy thermometer said 50 F, but I checked online, and it said 46 F. I also returned the thermal wetsuit I’ve been testing, so I was back in my 3:2 suit. I could really tell the difference. The other suit was much warmer and fit me better around the neck, so no leaks there.  It’s windy and in the high 30s F all this week, with highs in the 50s. Sucks. I haven’t done any exercise for several days because I’ve been tired and feeling

Cold Bold Waves Toss Me Like a Salad

Lake 48 degrees. April 3, 2022 Today at the lake it was pretty choppy, and it was cold. And drizzly. Lots of kite surfers in the water. I met with six others, soakers. They were dreading getting in; it’s always hard when the air temp is as low as the water temp. And wind makes everything colder.I was testing a thermal suit, so I had no worries wading into the waves. The video doesn’t show how big the waves were today. I’ve been in much worse, but it was still pretty brutal. Treading in Place While they soaked and chatted

Swimming in Thermal

Lake temp 47 F | April 1 2022 Today at the lake it was cold and choppy. I pushed too hard to do my 20 minute swim, and now I’m really exhausted. Still, I’m always glad to get my water time in. I always feel better, even if I make myself extra tired. I’ve been testing a thermal wetsuit. I appreciate the chance to test out different suits, but I wish I could find the perfect suit for me. Lots of fit issues with my odd body. This suit does a great job of keeping me warm, almost to warm

Perfect Way to End the Week

Today at the lake there were two sail boats, two kayakers, and two other swimmers. One of the swimmers was K, who I have been swimming with before. She was helping a new swimmer get acclimated, so they were just in and out of the lake. I was really happy to run into them. After the depressing swim I had two days ago I was ready to power it out today. I just got in and headed south and east. I had set my alarm for 20 minutes, so I wanted to swim out as far as I could. Really tough swim today. I was flat out when my alarm went off. I hit snooze 4 times. Decided to skip it and go for a walk at night. I felt so tired and sore throaty. But I got up and chugged an Yerba mate drink to wake up, threw my gear in the bag, and headed out.  Don’t Care About the Weather It was raining, so I wasn’t too happy about that as I drove to the park. I don’t mind swimming in rain but was afraid the park would be empty. I don’t like being the only person

Swim with Friend and Sunbeams

Today at the lake I went to another beach. It’s one of my favorites. The water is clear, I get a different view, and the beach is right at the end of a busy street of small neighborhood shops. There’s also a big apartment complex sticking out into/over the water. Even better, the bottom is SAND. No pebbles, no icky seaweed creepies. Sand beach, sand on the lake floor. I like swimming here because it feels safer. It’s not hidden away like the other beaches inside parks. People coming and going. Today people were sitting on the benches, probably wondering

Sunbeam Tunnel Swim & Spooky Photos

Today at the lake it was cold. Sunny but cold. The air was cold. The water was cold.  I had to put my face in and out about five times to acclimate. But I was in a rush because it was after 5pm when I started, so I got on with it and swam south and east. The water was not flat but was gently wavy. It didn’t impact my swimming so much, but it made it harder to float because little waves would splash into my mouth. I hate that.  The Lake So I just swam out and back.

Heaven is a Place on Earth

Monday, March 7, 2022 Sunny | water temp 45 degrees F Today at the lake. So tired. I didn’t even write anything today. But it was sunny. And I swam. Tried out a new wetsuit. OMG. So much more room and stretchy through the shoulders. When I was on the beach getting ready to enter the water a big black dog approached me. He was playing catch with his human. The ball was nowhere near me, but he walked over anyway to say hi. I didn’t think much of it because I was focussed on taking my pre-swim snaps and

The Sun Draws Us Near

March 3, 6:30pm Sunny | water temp 40 F Today at the lake, the water was flat, the sun was out, and I finally got my tiny video camera to work. And then I dropped it, and it floated away.  I got to the lake and was happy to see lots of cars in the parking lot. People were walking on the main path, others were walking their dogs on the hill where I saw people flying kites last week, and the lake was calling to me.   I could see from the parking lot that the water was nice

Just a Quickie

Feb 28, 2022 Today at the lake it was cold and windy. The water was really choppy, and my body felt like lead trying to swim. I meet two new swim pals, K and E.  They mostly soaked. E is a soaker. K is acclimating and sort of new to this cold water thing. I was a mess in the water. The wind made the water all murky, so I couldn’t see the bottom of the lake. I also couldn’t swim very well. So much effort. I alternated between treading water and trying to swim a few feet.  Never made

No Ducks, No Sunbeams Crashing This Party

Feb 19, 2022 | temp 40 F ish | Time in water: 24:40 Today at the lake, there were crazy wild white-capped waves. They didn’t look too bad on the shore, but once I was in the water I could see how impressive they were. Wow.  I took a few photos and a quick video of the water, toss my stuff in my buoy, and basically charged right in. Got myself to the metal post without falling over, tied my cane to it, and then tried to jump, hop, walk into deeper water. I was not going to be able

Good Idea to Listen to My Guide

Monday Feb 21 2022 | Sunny but cold! Today at the lake I made so many mistakes. And I was warned! The Gear  I drove home from the lake in silence today because there is no song for “I told you so,” and even if there is, T is much too kind to tell me that.  I wasn’t going to swim today because I was extra tired. I went to a dinner party last night and then stayed up too late re-watching episodes of Euphoria. I woke up congested, exhausted, and dreary. I also had a little bug in my

A Few Things I’ve Learned

swimming in open water is harder than swimming in a pool swimming in open water gives me a high like I’ve never gotten in a pool it’s important to get my gear dialed in it’s important to take care of my gear it’s important to shower after a swim because of DUCK POOP PARASITES the back of my neck and base of my skull get crazy cold, so I need extra warm gear everyone has their own way of being in the water everyone has their own way of dressing for the water……I am in awe of the women who

Sea Witch of the West

Feb 16, 2022 Today at the lake the water was cold but full of sunbeams. A flock of ducks landed in the water just as I was walking up to the edge. I think they scattered too quickly for me to get them in the pre-swim photo I took. That’s ok.  Bathing & Hygiene I can’t really look at ducks the same way the more I learn about “swimmer’s itch,” which is a nice way of saying duck poop parasites get in your skin. When I first started swimming back in July, I wanted the lake water on my body,

“Sing, Women” Swim Women

Feb 14, 2022 | water temp 40 F Today at the lake, I swam with K and K. The People It has been so long since I swam with them; I was really happy to see them again. I don’t think we have been to the lake together since the crazy wave jumping adventure….months and months ago. They both swim in a shorty spring-style suit, probably 2mm, with warm hats. They don’t put their faces in the water. They are acclimated to the water, totally. They walk in like I do, but I’m in layers of neoprene. I could never

Dig If You Will This Lake and Its Magic

Friday Feb 11, 2022 | water temp 40 F Today at the lake, it was sunny, the water was calm, the ducks were paddling about, and there was a huge gathering of black birds just north of the swim area.  As I was getting my snorkel and goggles on, I was surprised to look up and see two women sitting in the lifeguard chair. They looked adorable. I’ve only ever seen one person sitting up there, so that fact that the experience could be shared kind of tickled me. I said hello. They were wondering about the black birds. I

Thoughts Do NOT Equal a Plan

Feb 7, 2022 6:22pm  Today at the lake, the water was silent and glassy. A congregation of assorted birds were gathered on the cement dock, included a scary looking black bird I couldn’t identify. It was all angles and sharp points, like it was made out of metal and maybe couldn’t move so well. I wondered if it would attack me during my swim.  The Gear I was testing new gear today, which arrived from Denmark and was waiting on my porch when I got up. I’ve been waiting a couple of weeks for this. When I ordered it I

“Water that Heals as I Go”

February 5, 2022  6pm | water temp 40F Today at the lake, the water was glassy, the mountains where trying to peek out from behind the clouds, and the ducks were pecking the pebbles on the beach, looking for snacks.  Heavy Thoughts To Start I was sad when M picked me up today. I had planned on getting up in time for a livestream of a college classmate’s funeral, then got the day wrong. So when I woke up and realized what day it was I grabbed my phone to look for the video, started playing it, knowing M would

I Can Swim When I Want

Today at the lake…it was pouring rain. I didn’t care because I was antsy to swim. I convinced my friend to join me at the beach: she would walk loops on the mini walking path loop while I swam. We both get exercise.  I have no idea what the temperature was….but I think it was one of those “feels like 37 F” days. I didn’t realize how hard it was raining until I left for the lake, but I wasn’t bothered a bit. When you run cross country age 11 to 22, you learn that the workout is gonna happen

Oh, Yeah. Oh, Yeah.

Jan 25, 2022 Today at the lake, I swam by myself at my neighborhood beach. It’s not the best beach ‘cause the water is full of particles and duck poop germs. But it feels the safest when I go alone. There’s a walking path that goes right past the beach.  I had to get back home for a telehealth appointment, so I got my suit on half-way up, then drove to the beach. Got all my extras on and zippered up in the parking lot, so all I had to do was walk into the water.  Two nannies and their

Sunny Swim with Sunbeam Magic

Today at the lake I got to swim with K, who I haven’t seen since the crazy wavy jumping outing months and months ago.  I wrote a little chant for us to say before we got in the lake, “We are sea witches, proud and true; we’re going to swim in the lake so blue!” I am amazed by K, who has no body fat and swims in a thin shorty suit (w/ short sleeves), gloves, and socks. She also wears a regular silicone cap but doesn’t put her head in the water. She must acclimate quickly, because I have

“…the Rays of the Beautiful Sun”

Today at the lake, I swam for 24 minutes!! Technically, it’s more more like 18-20, or less, because I started the timer then had to get into my gloves, which takes a long time, then into the water. Also, it took me time to get out of my gloves so I could turn off the timer. So, maybe more like 15 min. Either way, I felt triumphant.  Here’s why: I’ve had a really shit week, and I’ve managed to end it on top. I haven’t slept much this week. A few nights I got a few hours of sleep, a

Solstice Swim

Today at the lake…I tried a new beach for a 7pm solstice swim. M took me, and it only took about 25 min to get there, no traffic, so now I know how to get there.  We arrived and everyone else was already in their gear and making their way to the beach. I found a place on the beach to get my gear on, but the group left without me. I guess that is how they roll. And they all know each other. I guess this is the Seattle way and the swim group way. I rushed my prep,

Big Waves, Dark Night, Old Swim Buddy

Today at the lake I swam in crazy strong waves, in the dark, while my summer swim buddy spotted me from the beach.  To be honest, I quit swimming a week ago, maybe longer, because I was so exhausted with putting so much time into finding swim buddies and almost never finding anyone to swim with. I have only met one swimmer who enjoys swimming at night, and she actually has a life. So, it got too hard to miss out on swimming day after day after day.  Then yesterday I got a text from my friend C who I

Same Lake, New Beach

I got up three hours earlier than normal and went to a new beach. I met up with V and her friend J. I almost never get to swim in daylight, so it was a real treat to be out during the day and to be able to make it to a group swim. I didn’t even mind the 35-minute drive.  It was cold outside, maybe 45 F, and starting to rain. Neither concerned me because I don’t give two poops about the weather. If I want to go for a walk or a swim, I’m gonna go. That’s the

Swim, Then Float

Today at the lake…I went for a late after swim with a neighbor, M. I met her a few weeks back when we were both swimming at the beach close to my house. I asked her to join my FB page, and she did! So, lucky for me she was just heading out for a quick dip when I messaged her.  I’ve been sick and out of it and not sleeping and generally feeling shitty and hateful for weeks. Haven’t been in the water in a week, so that always brings me down. I never know what it will be

NightSwimming

Today at the lake, I finally got to do a real night swim with V, another swimmer I met via online FB groups. I’ve tried to organize a couple of Friday night swims on the FB page I started for women who swim in the lake….and they never get off the ground. But V also likes to swim at night, and tonight things fell into place for both of us. We were both almost 30 min late because of traffic, so by the time we got our gear on and entered the water…it might have been 7:45pm? As we were

Sometimes Just Walk

Today at the lake I met with C at the beach closest to my house. The water was flat, the air was cold, and the park was quite dark except for two bright floodlights on the wall of the park rec building. Neither one of us had been in the water recently, so we were concerned about the cold. Would we be able to stand the water? C wears a neoprene jacket over a farmer Jane type wetsuit, but the jacket is too big so it’s not as effective as it should be. My suit is snug and does a

All The Things

Today at the lake…I swam for 15 minutes, I floated on my back, and I tested out new swim booties. I hope I also inspired two little kids to start thinking that most obstacles are not that big. There is usually a way around them. The water was nice and flat. 45 degrees F. Maybe 45 F air. I was the only one in the lake as far as I could see. At a bit after 4pm, there was enough daylight left since sunset is usually around 4:30pm. M took me to the lake and was my spotter. I like

New Beach, New Buddy

Today at the lake I visited a new beach and met a new swim buddy, E. I was excited to try out this beach because it’s nice and open, right at the end of an urban neighborhood (as opposed to in the middle of a park). It’s visible, there’s ambient light, and because it’s not inside a wooded park it seems safer – nothing to hide behind. The water was amazing as usual. Refreshing, clear, and relatively calm. E was walking back and forth in the shallow end. She is just getting started in OWS, so she is experimenting with

Awkward Re-entry

Today at the lake it was challenging getting back into swimming after a long break. I haven’t been for a proper swim since October 30th. I felt fussy about my face getting cold. My wetsuit was leaking water through the neck. It was hard to swim. No, it was hard to breathe while swimming. Amazing how much conditioning I lost in just 13 days. I also swam alone, so maybe that was part of my problem getting started. I had planned on meeting another swimmer, K, at another beach about 10 miles away. Normally about a 20-minute drive, but as

That was one fine adventure

Today I was a total sea witch. I was a badass. I was fearless. I got my butt kicked by the waves and exposed by the wind. I swallowed water but didn’t drown. My snorkel didn’t work, but I dove into the waves, over the waves and across the waves. The whipping sound of the wind and water just made it more exciting. I would have stayed longer, but K and K got out. Better to have swim buddies who know when they’ve had enough. Damn. That was one fine adventure.

Crazy Waves Thrilla

Today at the lake…we played “jump the waves,” aka try not to die. We arrived to actual whitecaps and gale force winds. Two of my swim buddies, K and K, walked up, and I said, “I don’t care. I’m going in.” They said, “we’re going in.” Awesome. We tried to set up under one of the picnic areas, but the wind still blew our gear away, and we had to chase after caps and gloves tumbling away in the grass. The water was insane. Huge waves, white caps, and crazy wind. A few windsurfers were out there, trying, but the

100 Shades of Grey

Today at the lake, we swam in the rain, we saw two herons (or the same once twice) and an eagle, and guess what else? I found my swim buoy belt that I lost yesterday! It was lying in the parking lot, right where I dropped it. Yea. I had a long doctor’s appointment this afternoon, so I had to change into my swimsuit at the clinic and head straight to the lake. I loved asking the doctor, “oh, do you mind if I use the room for a minute; I need to change into my swimsuit?” At least I

Skin Like a Seal

Yesterday at the lake, a bald eagle flew above me, looking for food. I didn’t see it, but my swim buddy, K, did. I’m bummed I missed it, but really glad it didn’t attack me. I see a lot of bald eagles around the lake. So fancy.  My new wetsuit is working out really well. (Thanks J and M.) Surprisingly, it fits well, and it’s comfortable. It’s thicker and much heavier than the sleeveless shorty suit I’ve been using.  Tonight II worked harder to do my strokes because of all the material around my arms and shoulders. That’s ok.  It

SeaWitch Don’t Care

Today at the lake it was cold and windy, and I forgot my snorkel. One of my swim buddies, K, cancelled due to “white caps” on the lake. I could see them from my house, but I went anyway. “Cause that’s the kind of woman I am. I grew up in the midwest, and played outside in the frigid cold winters. Rain or cold or snow never stopped me from running every day. So, cold, wind, and waves don’t mean anything to me unless I get in the water and it’s just too hard. Not gonna quit without trying. I

A Perfect Moonlit Swim and An Eagle

Today at the lake I saw the Cascade mountain range on the other side of the lake, the water was completely calm and flat, and I got to have a repeat swim date with A, a woman I swam with a few weeks ago. I had the best cold swim to-date.  We changed our venue to another beach about a mile north of the usual spot and just a mile from my house. In summer I never go to this beach because it’s smaller, more intimate, and packed with little kids and their parents. Also, the bacteria count for the

New Gear, Night Walking, A Gift

Today at the lake…I wasn’t at the lake! But I found some buddies for swim dates tomorrow and Friday. Also, two packages arrived at my door. A college friend sent me her husband’s fancy wetsuit. I think it’s barely a year old and looks totes new! Thank you, M and L. I had ordered the exact same suit from Amazon a couple weeks ago, and today Amazon emailed me to tell me the order had been cancelled because of some issue with my address. I think what happened is that a little seawitch fairy knew that M and L’s gift

Paint It Black: 30 Pull-Ups, 10 Ducks, 12 Min

Today at the lake it was dark, and the water was flat. My caretaker, M, took me to the beach with just 15 minute left until sundown. I love swimming at night; it’s just not ideal to be in the park alone once it gets dark. But we were two, and we felt safe.  It takes awhile to get the wetsuit on, and I forgot that once it’s on I can’t really bend over. I was rolling around on my beach towel, asking M to put my neoprene socks on. She couldn’t really do it, and maybe it is a

3mm Makes All The Dif The Movie

First, I want to show you the water. You can’t always tell in photos how harsh it is. Video is better because it captures the sound, and even the sound is harsh. I usually film the water before I get in, but today I had to wait until I was out of the water and dressed. If you think the water seems too dark and cold, you are missing out, my friends. Today was my first experience wearing a wetsuit. They f-ing work!!!! Game changer. I sat and watched this seagull try to eat an apple. Near the end you
